Graduated as an Optometrist. As well as clinical training, he received training in research and research methods, completing his PhD. Since then he has combined his clinical and research interests. He continues to practice in the area of biocular vision disorders and amblyopia ('lazy eye') and is actively engaged in research on these topics. He has received, and continues to receive, research funding from prestigious sources and has published his findings in high-profile journals of vision/optometry/ophthalmology as well as in general neuroscience journals. He teaches undergraduate optometry students about the core skills associated with optometry and about the basics of vision and the eye as optical system.

Expert is an optometrist has extensive clinical experience in treating and managing ablyopia ('lazy eye') and the conditions thought to cause it (strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes, and anisometropia, a significant difference in refractive error between the eyes). In addition to clinical experience he has worked for over twenty years on laboratory investigations that are aimed at understanding the impact of amblyopia, strabismus and anisometropia on visual perception and on the ability to complete functional tasks. Since gaining his PhD, amblyopia and its associated conditions have remained at the core of his research interest. He has published many peer-reviewed papers on the topic including a number of review articles. His research in the area has appeared not only in the leading journals of optometry/ophthalmology/vision science but also in highly-rated journals of a general neuroscience nature. His research has been, and continues to be, funded by high-profile charities and UK funding organisations. Amblyopia is a binocular vision disorder and Expert's research interest and expertise extend to other aspects/symptoms of an improperly functioning binocular system, including poor depth perception, diplopia (double vision), as well as less discrete binocular vision symptoms with which patients may present.
