Expert Insider: A Smarter Way to Consult

It’s the start of a new month and you know what that means, new insight into the expert industry! For April, we are going to focus on questions you should prepare yourself for during screening calls.

Expert by Big Village is here to make your life easier.

Our team put together a list of questions you can expect from clients — and questions for you to ask. Several of our client questions are specific to litigation work, but they’re important to prepare and consider for any screening call and for your ongoing work as a subject matter expert.

Questions to expect from a client:

  • Have you testified or been deposed before?
  • Can you describe your professional experience as it relates to this specific project?
  • Conflict check: Have you ever worked with/for competitors?
  • Timing: What is your availability to help us with this project/case?
  • Have you passed a Daubert challenge for expert witness work?

Questions for you to consider asking:

  • What is your timeline for project completion?
  • Will my expertise be distributed, quoted or shared? If so, with whom?
  • Corporate problem-solving: What have you already tried in addressing this issue?
  • What is your desired outcome?
  • Can you provide a scope of work, including hours predicted?

Once Expert has connected you with a client, the first critical step is to ensure the engagement fits your thought leadership. By the time you’re screening with an Expert client, they’ve probably already viewed your public profile — so it’s crucial for you to update this bio regularly. (More on expert profile updates in the March issue of Expert Insider.)

Our client will walk you through their need — a problem to solve, a litigation need, a tough business question — and then it’s your chance to explain aspects of your current work, career history, and relevant consulting. Try to stay on topic as much as possible: Expert limits screening calls to 15 minutes. It’s a balance of thoroughness and detail. We respect your busy schedule and limited availability, and we offer screening to our clients at no cost.

The Expert team is always here to help with any concerns regarding the screening process. Until your next chance to screen with a client, stay tuned for upcoming Expert Insider newsletters. We’re the experts on experts — helping you connect with the clients and projects that fit your skills and experience.

Looking forward to our next opportunity to collaborate!
