Expert has been engaged in full-time university employment since 1984. Initially his posts were fixed term research posts in the experimental study of visual cognition - speeded visual search, visual word recognition, visual shape and object recognition. Since 1988 he has held faculty positions with full teaching and research responsibilities in the area of experimental psychology - with special reference to attention and attentional control. His interests developed into attentional control in general and now has published extensively on both aspects of visual and auditory attention. He recently completed brain imaging studies on auditory word recognition using MEG and task switching using fMRI.

Most recently his interests has turned to the visual detection and identification of threat. He has a particular
interest in threat detection in various security settings and has acted in a consultancy role with an international manufacturer of a millimetre-wave body scanner in a bid to improve operator training with such devices.

Aside from his interests in experimental psychology, Expert has extensive knowledge and research experience with artificial neural network models of psychology processes. Key references are his textbook on connectionism and psychology and his edited book on connectionist models of development.

He has collaborated with the human factors team at Qinetiq in supervising post-graduate work on screening hand-luggage for threat objects.He has undertaken consultancy with an international manufacturer of a millimetre-wave body scanner in a bid to improve operator training with such devices.
