Expert has a B.S. and M.S. from the State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from North Carolina State University. Following graduation, he accepted a position as Plant Pathologist with the Southern Forest Experiment Station, USDA Forest Service at Gulfport, Mississippi. By the time that he left the Forest Service, Expert was a Principal Plant Pathologist (Wood Decay Specialist). That year he joined the staff of the Forest Products Laboratory at a U.S. university as Professor of Forest Products.
Expert has authored over 130 publications, including five patents (2 additional patents in process) and has achieved university honors such as the 1986 Faculty Achievement Award, Outstanding Faculty Member in the department (5 years), and appointment as a Distinguished Professor. Expert frequently is asked to make presentations on preventing and controlling wood decay at local, regional, national, and international meetings. He currently holds memberships in the American Wood Preservers’ Association (received their Award of Merit), Forest Products Society, Society of Wood Science and Technology, International Research Group on Wood Preservation, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Railway Tie Association, and the Entomological Society of America. He is a principal in two consulting companies, AMBAR, Inc and TASKpro Inc, and TermiSys Inc, a licensed (MS) pest control firm. He has served as an expert on several historic wood preservation projects dealing with structures/artifacts. These include: Christ Church and other historic properties in Philadelphia, Pa; Cambria Ironworks, Johnstown,; PA; covered bridges in PA and Ohio; the hull of the USS Cairo, Vicksburg, MS; and grave markers, Virgina City Nev.
