Expert completed his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia in 1973. He attended the University of Virginia Medical School and graduated in 1977. Over summer breaks, he participated in the development of an overnight camp for children with special medical needs sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics. This was one of the first summer camps for children with medical handicaps such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma and muscular dystrophy. During his senior medical year, he taught school in Charlottesville.
After receiving his medical degree, Expert started a Pediatric Internship at Emory University in Atlanta. Upon completion, he began a residency in psychiatry at Boston University Medical School from 1978-80.
In 1980, Expert started advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Harvard Medical School through Boston Children’s Hospital. He completed his training in 1982 and moved, where he established his private practice and started his family. He became Board Certified in Psychiatry in 1982 and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1986. Since 1982, Expert has been in private practice treating a wide variety of mental health conditions with an emphasis on exercise and proper nutrition. He also teaches and supervises Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows as an Assistant Professor (voluntary), where he has been presented with several teaching awards.
