Expert has achieved certification as a wound care nurse only after eight years of direct wound care experience. This certification comes having worked in both the inpatient patient and outpatient setting for twenty six years. Ten of those years in pediatrics working with the smallest of the small open heart patients, five in middle management being responsible for the instruments used on surgical patients, eight in post anesthesia, three years as a program manager for a wound clinic and now as a unit manager where 50% of his patients have DRGs associated with wounds.

Like medical boards one is allowed to sit for wound certification only after an 'internship' is completed. Having worked for a durable medical equipment provider who sold wound care products (Kinetic Concepts, Inc [KCI] of San Antonio, Texas) Expert learned what did and did not work from the DME world for wound care. The VAC is a good tool but has it limits as do therapy beds. From that job he moved on to run a wound care clinic. With three years of hands-on experience with both General and Vascular surgeons as his mentors, he learned the true medical model of modern wound care.

Expert's Model of wound care:
Most wounds are avoidable (see below).
Wounds that are avoidable are caused by factors that are 'upstream'. These factors may be lack of blood flow (pressure ulcers or bed sores), infection, etc.)
It does not matter what expensive product you place in the wound bed unless you address the entire patient, e.g. the factors 'upstream'.
