Request Expert

Expert has over 30 years experience in the aerospace, defense and commercial industries with extensive expertise in the mechanical and precision engineering fields as an engineer, manager, consultant, educator and author with tremendous emphasis on geometric tolerancing. He is a recognized leader in the dimensional tolerancing and physical metrology fields. Expert has extensive technical society affiliation and recognized worldwide as chairman and member of U.S. committees as well as U.S. representative on international standards development in the areas of physical metrology, dimensional tolerancing and uncertainty analysis, with emphasis in the sub-micrometer regime. Expert is a member of U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization "ISO/TC213" on the subject of geometric tolerancing, physical metrology, and uncertainty analysis. He is actively involved as a member and chairman of applicable U.S national standards covering the scope these same above topics. Expert notes that dimensional tolerancing covers the full scope of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per the ASME Y14.5 Standard and associated ISO 1101 and supporting ISO standards, mathematization of dimensional tolerancing Principles per the ASME Y14.5.1 Standard, 3D modeling per the ASME Y14.41 Standard and functional gaging per the ASME Y14.43 Standard. He further notes that physical metrology covers the full scope of physical measurement of discrete parts in support of all industries. His measurement expertise encompasses everything from: surface plate measurement; hand tools; the broad scope of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), both contact and non-contact; white light interferometry, etc. Expert is a member of the ASME B89 Consensus Committee responsible for standardization of physical measurement practices. He is Chairman of ASME B89.7, which is the committee responsible for development of standards and technical reports targeted to aid industry in the integration and critical analytical tools covering the scope of uncertainty analysis. Expert notes that, given the state of global technology and growing technological constraints, such as miniaturization and tolerance truncation, the world requires higher precision in engineering modeling and analytical tools and the critical need to expand current knowledge and principles within all engineering disciplines. Based on this critical and global need, Expert consults in the areas of corporate technology forecasting, advanced measurement development, advanced mechanical design and modeling techniques, physical measurement strategies, uncertainty analysis, employee development planning, external technology development collaborations, analysis, and recommendations based on technology trends.

Expert has extensive expertise in mechanical tolerancing optimization to ensure the maximum allocation of tolerancing resulting in significant cost reductions in manufacturing and inspection. Design for manufacturability, design for assembly, and design for inspectability have all been key focused efforts of his, with high-volume and low cost being direct beneficiaries. A critical tool he has used in these optimization efforts is statistical tolerance analysis, which encompassed translational as well as rotational stackup considerations with many inherent influencing factors considered. He has spent years consulting and teaching engineers in all industries how to complete tolerance stack up analysis and take into consideration historical knowledge of process capability information on applicable like-type processes.

Expert is actively involved with the development of a national standard (ASME Y14.43) on "Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles for Gages and Fixtures." For many years he was directly responsible for measurement laboratories and quality systems. He researched, tested, purchased, and integrated measurement equipment to support in-process and final inspection areas. He developed inspection and calibration procedures in support of laboratory and manufacturing environments as well as supported applicable training to ensure positive integration. He has in-depth expertise designing functional gaging (variable and attribute) for component and assembly feature characterization.

Expert was responsible for managing metric integration within a major U.S. corporation, and has consulted for project managers at various companies throughout the world to aid them in their metric integration efforts.
