Expert is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Ergonomist and has worked in Military Aircraft since the mid 1970s with EASAMS, BAe Military Aircraft and ESE Associates. Her primary focus has been on the design, development and test of Cockpit Human Machine Interfaces. She was Manager of the BAe Farnborough Cockpit Group from 1990 to 1999 and has worked on the Eurofighter, Tornado, Harrier and Hawk platforms. She managed the Human Factors Research and Technology programmes at Farnborough, which included the development of advanced display interfaces and the development of methods, techniques and tools for the efficient application of Human Factors across the complete design life cycle.
She was an active Panel Member of the NATO AGARD Aeromedical Panel and the NATO RTO Human Factors and Medicine Panel from 1992 to 2001 and received the NATO RTO Excellence Award for her contribution to the Panel in 2001. She has chaired many international conferences and has been involved in three NATO Working Groups: Designer’s Guide to Human Performance Models, Human Reliability in Safety Critical Systems and Human Factors Contribution to Cost Effectiveness Modelling.

She has been an independant Human Factors consultant for ESE Associates since 2000 and has employed her HF expertise in a number of different domains. She has provided training courses at Imperial college, Cranfield University, Portsmouth University, University of West of England and Surrey University. She has carried out ergonomic assessments for Helicopter evacuation trials, conducted display assessments for Unmanned Aircraft Ground Stations and lead a visualisation trial for NITEworks logistics theme.

She updated CAP 676 Guiidelines for the Design and presentation of Abnormal and Emergency Checklists for the UK CAA. She has provided guidance material in the training and assessment of Pilot Monitoring Skills and Crew Resource Management for the CAA

Expert has been involved in aircraft integration for over 30 years. This involved the analysis terrain following radar system on the Tornado GR1, the integration of JTIDS onto Tornado F3, integration of Maverick and Paveway 4 on Harrier. She was part of the Mission Management Aid programme which looked at future decision aiding in-flight facilities.

She provided the Early Human Factors Analysis for a large research programme dealing with the feasibility of operating autonomous UAVs in UK civil airspace. She conducted a Human Error Analysis of the Ground Station Operator’s tasks and produced a Warnings philosophy. Towards the end of the 3 year programme she conducted a visualisation trial using a proof of concept simulator to investigate design issues associated with control of the UAV from the Ground Station. She carried out Helicopter evacuation trials to ensure that there were no fouling issues with the Aircrew Equipment Assemblies (AEA) proposed for use on various helicopter missions. The trial necessitated involvement of a representative range of large (95 %tile) and small (3 %tile) pilots. Therefore measurement and comparison against the Defence Standard 00-25 part 17 were carried out. An ergonomic assessment of the cockpit was also executed to ensure reach and operation of the required controls was not compromised by the AEA. It was also necessary to establish that there was no obscuration of the visual fieldsShe worked on the integration of several weapon system upgrades for the Harrier GR9 mission system. This involved carrying out in-depth requirements capture utilising prototyping software to enable Pilots to visualise the proposed design solutions. She has participated in many Pilot Working Groups to debate and update the designs. The design solutions were then documented into requirement specifications as part of the overall detailed design process.She was the visualisation lead for a series of experiments investigating processes and structures for a new UK Joint Forces Logistics Cell. The aim of the activity was to use Networked Enabled Communication (NEC) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of materiel and aeromedical management processes. This enabled prioritisation decisions to be made accurately and support in-theatre logistics movements.She was part of a team conducting a Human Factors audit on the UK MOD Defence Acquisition practices. The aim was to establish the extent to which Human Factors Integration principles and practices had been adopted and to identify any barriers. A representative cross section of the different capability groups, phase of procurement and project size were interviewed and the results analysed and presented in a comprehensive report. A follow up activity was carried out to investigate Human Factors issues with in-service equipment.
