Expert is board certified in internal medicine and nutrition by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Nutrition and the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists. He received his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1958 and completed his internship in ward medicine and resident training in pathology in 1961. He also completed an additional research residency in medicine at the VA medical center in Nashville, TN in 1964 before returning to Vanderbilt University Hospital as a Chief Resident in medicine in 1965.

He has focused the majority of his professional career on reseraching and studying zinc deficiency in the field of clincial and human nutrition. His research focused mostly on the effects of zinc deficiency on the brain, DNA and RNA synthesis and the liver. He also does research on humans at various stages of the life cycle with a specific focus on neuropsychological function, the co-occurrence of zinc and iron deficiencies, and zinc kinetics.

His past research, workshops and seminars has been on zinc and copper in humans, factors affecting bioavailability of essential minerals in human nutrition, essentiality of zinc for human pregnancy, interactions among essential nutrients (e.g., iron, copper, folate) and the essentiality of zinc for brain development and function in rats and primates. He continues to do research on these topic expanding his workshops and seminars internationally.

He is a professor at a medical school and a member of a graduate school. He has served on committees of the World Health Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the US National Academy of Sciences, the NIH, the USDA, and various NGOs including professional societies, The American Council on Science and Health, and the US Pharmacopoeia.

Expert has several consulting experiences including serving as a consultant medical staff at two different hospitals in the states of North Dakota and Texas. He has also served as a consultant for the National Heart Lung Blood Institute, for the FDA regarding drug products development, and for a private case concerning a case of presumed cadmium pollution. He has also served as a consultant for the International Nutritional Anemia Consult Group as part of the US-Agency for International Development (AID) efforts. His most recent consulting experience include providing expert consultation on the role of micronutrients in intellectual development as part of the UNESCO presentation in Crete.

He also has served as an expert witness for the US Post Office regarding a case of nutrition fraud and for the FTC on a case of nutrition fraud as well. He has experience giving testimony for the United States Government, Congress and House of Representatives on issues regarding nutrition, foreign agriculture and domestic agriculture.


Expert was a Consultant for the National Heart Lung Blood Institute, NIH.Expert was a Consultant for the Office of Orphan Drug Products Development administered by the FDA.
