Expert spent many years working with vibration issues in machinery. His experience ranges from engineering research and design of low noise and vibration machinery to practical vibration analysis and control of machinery installed in the field. The success in resolution of various vibration issues is coming not only from experience and understanding the principles of machine vibration but also from close familiarity with machine component interaction, principles of operation, and application of various types of machinery.

Expert's capabilities:

* Vibration testing and diagnostics
* Multi-channel synchronous vibration data acquisition and analysis
* Field and factory acceptance testing and troubleshooting
* Vibration spectrum analysis and machine fault diagnostics – imbalance, misalignment, looseness, bearing faults, etc.
* Modal Analysis – natural frequencies, mode shapes, detuning, modeling of modified structures
* Operating Deflection Shapes analysis – visualization of machine movement at resonance condition or due to a mechanical fault
* Diagnostics of vibration problems due to abnormal machine operation – out of range operation, cavitation, overload, process media interaction, etc.

* Vibration Control Solutions
* Precision machine balance and alignment
* Structural detuning and damping
* Vibration Isolation – engineering and design
* Dynamic Vibration Absorbers – passive vibration suppression devices

* Design and Analysis
* Finite Element Analysis (FEA) – modeling and analysis of machine structures for natural frequencies, mode shapes, and response to periodic and transient excitation forces
* Rotor Dynamic Analysis – analysis of rotor lateral and torsional critical speeds, mode shapes and rotor torsional and lateral response functions
* Design and analysis of structural modifications and machine design improvements to alleviate high vibration

Expert is experienced in many areas of mechanical engineering. These areas include design and analysis, machine shop and assembly technologies, product testing and certification, third party approvals, special component procurement, research and development, equipment start-up and field troubleshooting, failure analysis, ISO 9000 quality system, expert witnessing and other areas. This experience is coming from expert's work for many years as manager and director of engineering of a manufacturing company. The primary product was custom engineered pumps and electric motors.

Expert has extensive background in pump engineering. He is proficient in the areas of pump design, manufacturing, application and operation. More specifically, the range of expertize includes pump operation in a pumping system, multiple pump operation, variable speed pump applications, hydraulic performance, pump testing (both at the factory and in the field), effects of piping hydraulics, out of range operation, system design, and installation issues. One important area of expertize is pump vibration. Pump vibration analysis and troubleshooting techniques developed by the expert over the years allow quick and accurate diagnostics of a vibration issue whether it has mechanical, hydraulic, or structural nature.

Array

A 2000 Hp centrifugal pump experienced out of specification vibration levels after installation. It was established by preliminary tests that there was a resonance condition excited by the vane passing frequency. Subsequent modal analysis revealed that the pump supporting frame made of steel beams had insufficient stiffness and was responsible for a number of mode shapes that had been excited within the pump operating speed range. After a computer simulation was performed a solution was proposed and implemented to modify the support by adding concrete around the beams. The solution has drastically reduced vibration by eliminating the resonance condition.To reduce resonance vibration in a large motor a dynamic vibration absorber was proposed as a solution. Additional research was necessary as the motor was operating with variable speed and the absorber had to be designed to accommodate the motor's speed range. The resulting design allowed independent tuning of all absorber parameters to achieve the desirable dynamic properties.
