As a Expert has taught graduate courses in nanostructure fabrication for more than 10 years, as well as guided a successful research group in this field. He has conducted leading research in the area of electron-beam lithography, ion-beam lithography, and templated self-assembly with block copolymers. Expert's achievements in this field have been recognized through numerous awards, including status as fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineering (IEEE). As a PhD student, his thesis focused on developing new methods of nanolithography.

Expert's research has focused on electron- and ion-beam lithography, specifically on understanding the physical mechanisms by which charged-particles lose energy in materials, and how those impact resolution limits and proximity effect. His research also uses electron-beam lithography to fabricate nanoscale devices that are applicable to real-world systems such as photodetectors used in microscopes and communications systems.

Expert's research includes nanopatterning via templated self-assembly, specifically on understanding the mechanisms by which block copolymers and other nanopatterning materials can be directed to form ordered patterns on surfaces. He has published his work on this subject in premier journals such as Science and Nature Nanotechnology.

Expert has worked on developing technologies for photonic and superconducting quantum computing. His work has focused on manufacturing and testing qubits. He has taught graduate quantum mechanics and has written a review article on the topic of superconductive quantum computing, published in the proceedings of the IEEE. He has additionally consulted on this topic in the past.

Expert has applied his nanomanufacturing skills and experience to design and fabricate novel infrared superconducting detectors based on lithographically patterned superconducting nanowires. He also has extensive experience in the optics and photonics required to design nanofabricated superconducting photodetectors. The detectors his group has developed are at the forefront of infrared photonic sensing for applications in communications, quantum information, microscopy, and metrology. He has published and patented ideas extensively in this field.

Expert has developed superconducting device nanofabrication capabilities including supervision of a multi-step superconducting electronics manufacturing facility. In this role, he supervised fabrication and testing of superconducting devices including classical single-flux-quantum devices, and quantum devices for use in quantum computation. He has published extensively in this field, and holds related patents.
