Expert trained as a research chemist and has over 25 years of experience in senior technical and management roles in the alumina industry, and over 10 years as an independent consultant. He has detailed knowledge of the chemistry and practice of the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite, and of the production of high purity alumina (HPA). He has published several research and review papers in that field. Particular areas of interest related to alumina refining include the origin, role, and management of organic compounds and sodium oxalate in particular; bauxite residue ("red mud") chemistry, management and re-use; environmental management; volatile emissions and air quality; and chemical analysis and laboratory management. He regularly provides advice to the industry has been an expert witness in several patent defenses and other legal actions.

Expert has worked with research and commercial analytical laboratories for over thirty years. He is experienced with conducting original research and laboratory test work related to mineral processing; has established, developed, and managed large industrial, analytical laboratories in the bauxite/alumina industry. He has helped establish modern analytical methods for certifying alumina and bauxite products and has overseen the certification of laboratories and industrial facilities to ISO 9001 and 14001 quality and environmental standards. He is now an independent consultant and Director of Employer.
