Expert is a physicist who has both general and expert knowledge of flow sensing technologies and metering techniques, primarily in gases obtained for industrial uses and healthcare industries ranging from practical engineering applications to detailed design and new concept generation. He invented and demonstrated one patented turbine flow sensor and one patented thermal-time-of-flight flowmeter for gas flow measurement, both devices exhibiting uniquely high performance in speed of response and insensitivity to composition. The latter device was for respiratory flow measurements and was demonstrated on human patients under anesthesia. He authored (by invitation) a chapter on turbine flowmeters in a handbook.

Expert has extensive experience in a range of sensor technologies and new sensor development accrued during 23 years of experience in academic and industrial R&D. He has general experience in physical measurements; however, he also has a range of specialized sensise having both led and contributed to a series of research and development sensor and instrumentation projects in industry and academia. He has generated a range of new measurement concepts not only in flow measurement but also in multigas analysis (one patented visible emission spectrometer), one demonstrated miniature mass spectrometer, temperature measurement (using platinum coated glass fibers), oxygen sensing, and helium leak detection (multiphoton ionization concept). Expert is knowledgeable of a number of extrinsic fiber optic sensing technologies, having initiated one major project to develop new fiber optic sensors for invasive use in patients and having also variously consulted on and evaluated new fiber optic sensing technologies (pressure, oxygen, pH) for medical industries. Several years ago he provided a review for corporate R&D of silicon micromachining capabilities for new micro and integrated sensors.


Starting as a senior engineer and later becoming a principal investigator, Expert was the founding member of a biomedical instrumentation R&D group in support of a major US healthcare company. The emphasis of his work was on critical care. During the course of his 11 year stay in that group, Expert conducted a number of R&D projects and collaborated on others to develop new instrumentation and sensors, including respiratory flow sensing, respiratory gas composition, respiratory gas exchange, and patient temperature measurement. He also evaluated FHR techniques for fetal monitoring.

Expert is currently assisting a Fortune 500 company in the development of an environmentally related OBD sensor.

Expert is currently leading an effort to develop a new type of capacitive proximity sensor for a West Coast client which is intended for a high volume commercial product.

Expert frequently advises clients on appropriate sensor technologies for varied applications in the field of physical sensing and also previously assisted a major web based business in the selection of sensor technologies for inclusion at their web site.

Expert is experienced with both extrinsic and intrinsic fiber optic sensors. Extrinsic fiber optic sensors comprise an optical fiber or optical waveguide that is used to relay optical signals to and from a sensing tip, which is designed to sense a specific measurand. The sensing tip could, for example, comprise a deflecting mirror or optical cavity structure that responds to external pressure or strain, or it could be a specific reactive chemical that may, for instance, change color for sensing changes in pH or changes its photoluminescent properties for sensing changes in oxygen concentration in the surrounding environment. Intrinsic fiber optic sensor types are those where the measurand acts directly on the fiber and there is no sensing "tip." This is used most commonly where strain or pressure results in a slight change in length and this change is then commonly detected and measured interferometrically. He was a project leader for seminal studies and proof of principle, which gave rise to a major corporate research program. He also provided assistance to a technology transfer company regarding a patented fiber optic sensing technology (extrinsic type) based on optical birefringence.

SOLID AEROSOL CHARGING. Expert developed advances in the theory of field charging of solid aerosols as part of his PhD studies, which also included several years of experimental experience.

As an independent consultant, he is currently leading two major R&D sensor projects for industry clients. Both projects started at the concept stage and have evolved through to prototype development while one is now entering engineering development. He also has extensive previous work experience initiating and leading industrial R&D projects involving a broad range of sensor types.He has provided assistance in evaluating new technologies for technology transfer and also to consult on the viability of new technologies for specific applications.He has assisted a dot.com in a senior consulting capacity for the preparation and organization of sensor related material for web publication.He has provided numerous brief consultations to clients via telephone and e-mail for guidance and evaluation in a wide range of sensor and measurement related areas.
